The Result of Eight Years Obama's 'Change We Can Believe In'

The Majority of Battleground
States Went for Trump

Donald J. Trump secured his victory by winning seven out of 13 battleground states that President Obama won at least once (Mr. Trump was also leading in Michigan as of Wednesday). The largest of those electoral prizes was Florida, which favored him by just 1.3 percentage points. Mr. Trump also flipped Pennsylvania, which had not voted for a Republican since 1988, and Wisconsin, which had not voted for one since 1984.

Many Republican-Leaning
States Became Even More So

Thirteen Republican strongholds increased their margins for Mr. Trump by more than five percentage points over what Mitt Romney secured in 2012, reinforcing the country’s swing to the right.

Some Democratic States
Shifted Toward the Center

Eight reliably Democratic states, primarily in the Northeast, shifted more than five percentage points toward the center, reflecting Mr. Trump’s strength with white, working-class voters.Even in Mrs. Clinton’s home state, New York, the Democratic candidate performed worse than Mr. Obama did in 2008 and 2012 (though New York is also Mr. Trump’s home state). Although Mrs. Clinton was the overall winner of Maine, Mr. Trump captured one electoral vote from the state, which splits its electoral votes by congressional district.
